Medeo or Медео, just south of Almaty in the Tien Shan mountains, is an outdoor skating rink. It sits at 1,691 meters above sea level making it the highest skating rink in the world. It first opened in 1951, as a main attraction in the former Soviet Union, and the rink went on to see great success with many speed skating records achieved at Medeo.
The rink is only 15 minutes from our house. It is quite the popular destination with tourists, as well as locals. The atmosphere is fantastic with 90′s music playing loudly over the speakers, tea and local delicacies available for purchase, and a rink consistently packed full of skaters of all varying ages and skill levels.
We went up there with some friends about a month ago and had a terrific time! It didn’t take me long to get back into the swing of things despite the fact that I couldn’t recall the last time I was on skates. I even manged some figure eights and a bit of backwards skating too.
